Protecting Terracotta from Frost & Salt
In summer, plants' water needs increase dramatically, making daily watering essential. However, the relationship between water and a ceramic vessel hides two major challenges that affect both the appearance and the lifespan of the pot: white salt stains during the warm months and, most importantly, the risk of the pot cracking or shattering as soon as winter's first cold sets in. Many ordinary pots are quickly destroyed by these stresses. The solution, however, is not found in post-purchase fixes, but in the way the structure of the clay is protected right from the moment of production.
How do we stop salt efflorescence and frost damage?
Water entering the pores of the clay causes salt stains in summer and cracks in winter. Hellas Ceramics addresses the issue by combining firing at 960°C with factory silicone immersion. This molecular shield blocks moisture, offering high frost resistance and a clean surface for about 5 years (according to the manufacturer of the silicone solution), allowing the natural aeration of the roots.
1. Why do white marks appear on pots in summer?
Terracotta is a 100% ecological material, crafted solely from earth and water. Porous Thessalian clay has a natural, microporous structure that allows roots to breathe freely. Unlike suffocating plastic pots, terracotta allows air to pass through.
However, when we water, tap water—which is full of minerals—is absorbed by the walls of the pot. As the sun heats the outer surface, water is drawn outward and evaporates. The salts, however, are left behind, crystallizing on the surface and creating white marks (efflorescence), which in warm, humid conditions can even develop mold.
2. How can frost destroy an ordinary pot?
If salt buildup is a serious aesthetic problem, frost is the real "executioner" of an ordinary pot. When water penetrates the interior of the ceramic and the temperature drops below 0°C—a very common occurrence in Central and Eastern European climates—the trapped water freezes.
Upon freezing, water expands (as ice increases in volume by approximately 9%). The internal pressure exerted on the walls of the pores is immense, as documented by thermodynamic studies on water behavior in porous materials. If the pot has absorbed water, continuous freeze-thaw cycles create microscopic cracks, leading to flaking (spalling) or even the complete breakage of the vessel.
3. Double shielding with firing at 960°C and liquid silicone

- Targeted Firing at 960°C: Thessalian clay is fired at exactly this temperature to obtain the necessary structural stability and mechanical strength, without closing its pores and losing its ability to aerate the roots.
- Immersion in Liquid Silicone (Silanes): After firing, the pot is immersed in a specialized, water-soluble alkyl-silane emulsion. Due to their extremely small molecular size, silanes penetrate deep into the pores of the clay and chemically bond with the silica of the ceramic, a process known in modern materials science for the hydrophobic protection of mineral surfaces. Related research, such as studies on the durability of silane and siloxane coatings on clay brick (Journal of Building Engineering), demonstrates the efficiency of silanes in preventing moisture penetration without blocking transpiration.
This treatment does not create a film on the surface that will peel off after a while. Instead, it lines the pores internally, creating an invisible hydrophobic shield, based on the self-cleaning phenomenon of the lotus flower (Lotus Effect). This treatment ensures that "the plant breathes" normally, while maintaining a healthy microclimate for the roots.
Water in liquid form (either from watering or rain) cannot enter the interior of the ceramic. Because the walls of the pot remain dry, frost finds no moisture to freeze and expand, keeping the pot safe in winter. At the same time, because water does not penetrate the ceramic, salts are not carried to the outer surface, eliminating white stains. Nonetheless, the pot continues to breathe normally, as water vapor and air can pass through freely.
The effectiveness of this methodology is laboratory certified according to the European standard UNI EN 1504-2 (Class W3 - low permeability to liquid water), ensuring top-tier protection.
